Don’t give up!

It’s that time of year… Nobody is showing up to class.. The people that are showing up are all late… There’s NO motivation! All the other colleges have had Fall Break by now or are having it next week for Thanksgiving.. and We have class until Wednesday at noon.. The day before Thanksgiving.  It really stinks.. We all just want to enjoy the holidays and have a BREAK from school… So what can you do to get motivated???

One thing – Look on the bright side… 1 week until Thanksgiving break.. Although it’s not a long break it is at least something to look forward to!  Then, less than a month until Christmas break!! And if you are a freshman and haven’t experienced a college Christmas break yet, let me tell you.. They rock!  Our break is about a month long!  Compared to two weeks in high school its amazing!  So when you don’t want to go to class tomorrow morning, just remind yourself that soon you will have a whole month of sleeping in.. So get up and go!

Another way to beat the blues… If you are a twilight fan, take a day this weekend to throw all studies out the window!  Don’t worry, you can do this every once in a while and not flunk out.. Anyways, throw your studies out the window one day this weekend and go see the new Breaking Dawn!  It’s the last one, so make a day of it!  Make a tshirt, eat out, get some friends to go with you and then get some coffee afterwards!  Your mind will appreciate the break from school (:

One more way to make it through this last bit of the semester… NAPS.  It’s been proven that a 30 minute nap during the day increases productivity!  I don’t have any 1 O’clock classes, so every day after lunch I take a 30 minute nap.. When I don’t, I can definitely tell the difference in my motivation level.. So try to set a time each day and make it a priority to take a SHORT nap!

You can do it!  We are so close to the holidays but it’s still important to focus on school!  Right now you can either make the grade or break the grade!

STRESS!

These last few weeks of school are very stressful. A lot of students can probably tell you it feels a lot like this:

epic treadmill fail animated gif

but it’s okay! We all just have to get through these next few weeks and SUMMER will be here!

For you upcoming freshmen, this is an exciting summer because you’re mostly all ready for the school year to be here. And WT is very excited for you to come! So hopefully everyone gets through finals (even you high school students). Because i guarantee after this guy fell on the treadmill, he got right back up (maybe not immediately because that probably hurt), but he got up alright! I hope everyone finishes their semester good! 🙂

Finding Peace in the Midst of Finals

Finals are approaching.  There’s no way out of it.  Although it’s sooo important to study, it’s equally important to find time to relax!  However, with those tests looming it’s easy to push relaxation to the side! And even if you wanted to relax, how could you?  Being a college student means you always have people around you, and that in itself can be stressful.  Some ideas?

1. Use the study nooks in your dorm.  –  Shirley Hall has a loft, which is AMAZING for studying.  And I know that Cross and Gunther also have little nooks that can be used for studying.  But change it up a little.  Use these secluded areas as a chance to catch some z’s!  Take a pillow and a blanket and turn on the light in this area and fall asleep.  Many times these places are deserted.  Take advantage of that!  If you’re roommate has taken over your room, and you need to find a place to go, these nooks are always inviting.

2. Go to the library. – Once again, the library is usually associated with studying.  But take a book that you are reading for fun, or maybe take an art project that you are doing on your own.  Find a quiet place and just find your zone.  Block out the world and focus on your book.  Escape for a while.

3. Go to Counseling Services. –  They have massage chairs in these little dark rooms.  It’s nice.  I went one time and just fell asleep for about 30 minutes and felt so much better!

And if all else fails, and you can’t get rid of your friends, make a date out of it!  The staff of Shirley Hall is having a relaxation day.  We are all making appointments for massage chairs and are gonna do our nails and stuff.  It’s not getting away from everyone, but we all have relaxation on our mind.  That’s a start!

The End Is….Near?

The end is here….well almost….well I guess it really isn’t unless you are graduating…and I am not so I guess technically the end isn’t here. Of course it also depends on how you look at “the end” and what your definition of “the end” is. Even though “the end” might be here, there is still a week of finals to go through. Does that mean it is the beginning? I’m not sure, but I do know this next week will be full of late night study sessions, blue books, and lots of Tylenol. To those of you who that is true for, I offer you my sympathy and kind of laugh a little bit too.

Here is the deal. I only have one final and that is Thursday morning. Unfortunately it is in Spanish and it is going to absolutely ruin me. So instead of being responsible and studying for my test I am going to tell ya’ll some of the best ways to study for your finals and tests in general. These are just little hints I have picked up in my 15+ years of schooling so hopefully you can benefit from one or two things on my list.

1. When you study, actually concentrate and study…that means no facebook.

2. Some people must have it quiet to study, if that is you then I would suggest not staying at your house, dorm, apartment, or wherever you live. From my own experience, if I stay at my house to study, I always get distracted by the computer, tv, people, or just whatever. If you like quiet places I would recommend going to any of the coffee shops in Amarillo during the day. All the annoying high school kids that go at night are still stuck in school and everyone knows adults don’t get loud. Also, if the weather is good you could hit up the park, but since this is the Texas panhandle and its either 20 degrees, 50mph wind, or 110 degrees, the park might not be such a good idea.

3. The opposite of that are the people that like to study when it’s noisy. To that, I say stay at home, turn on the tv, invite people over, and turn up the music. In other words, don’t have a group study session, have a group study party. Obviously, invite people over that have to study as well.

4. Use flashcards. It is amazing how simple yet effective flashcards can be. Flashcards for an essay test? Not so much. Flashcards for terms or formulas? Basically, a 3X5 miracle.

5. If you like coffee, drink it up, if you don’t like coffee….learn to love it. It will help you stay awake. I am a huge coffee fan so of course anytime I study I have a pot of coffee to keep me company. If you don’t really know what coffee to buy don’t go to Wal-Mart and get something like folders. Gross. Take a break from studying go to Starbucks, buy a pack of whole bean coffee and have them grind it for you. If you like strong dark coffee get the Sumatran blend. If you like the lighter stuff go for the breakfast blend. If you like a little extra flavor, you have to try the Coffee-Mate tiramisu or peppermint mocha coffee creamers. They are amazing.

6. Don’t wait to start studying the night before the test and then stay up until 4a.m. I have found out it is much more beneficial to start studying three or four days before the test and only spend about an hour or two each day. This way you actually remember the stuff for more than a week after the test, you have time to hang out with friends during the night, and most importantly you don’t take the test with only four or five hours of sleep.

7. Get a good night’s sleep and study during the day. You are already used to going to class during the day so why not continue in something you are already used to? Getting seven or eight hours of sleep and then studying when you are fully awake and not about to fall asleep is so much better than studying after you have been awake all day, you are tired, and you cant concentrate.

To sum everything up find out how you best study, get some coffee, and don’t study very long at a time.

Until next semester, have a great Christmas break and good luck!

Party in the HELC…or…not.

So I am down here in the computer lab printing off a study guide for a final tomorrow.  No, I’m not procrastinating…it’s one I made to remember the information easier.

Anywho, so I’m down here in the HELC and I know NO ONE!  This is such a rarity.  I mean, I used to dread coming down here, not because I hate the facilities; far from it, cause the HELC has some pretty kick ass stuff.  No…I used to hate coming down here because I would never get anything done.  I’d see tons of people and would stay for hours just chatting it up.  It was like the after party for the JBK.  Everyone would end up coming over here at night to study and what not, so you’d see everyone.

Tonight it is just as busy as it used to be; however, my circle of friends has grown smaller now that I am a senior.  Everyone I used to hang out with has since graduated, and the ones I do hang out with now were never down here to begin with.   It’s kind of bittersweet I guess.  There are tons of fresh faces here at WT who will soon be in the same boat as me, so that’s a good thing.  It’s just a bummer because it is the realization that I am about to have to leave to enter the real world.   SCARY!!!!!

Well, I guess I have rambled enough for tonight.  Back to the task at hand, print off my stuff and go study.

 Good Night and Good Luck {on finals.}

ice, ice, baby…

winter is HERE!  I woke up this morning to a world slathered in ice.  church was canceled, and I’m all comfy by my computer, finishing up some studying for my last final tomorrow.  yay neuroscience…  maybe it will be too icy to go to school and the professor will give us ALL automatic A’s.  haha.

last weekend was amazing…  we had the Renaissance Festival on campus, and all of us chamber singers put on our furry, lacy, poufy medieval costumes and performed at the feast.  the guys’ costumes were the funniest — they had to wear tights (after they figured out how to put them on!) and knee-pants.  anyway, we sang songs about boar’s heads, wassail, geese, and all sorts of other foods that we never eat any more, and we got to eat that food, too.  my favorite was the figgy pudding and the wassail.  That weekend we also had the annual Carol of the Lights — WT students, faculty, and people from the Canyon community gathered around the new buffalo statue to sing Christmas carols and see Dr. O’Brien turn on all the Christmas lights — and our huge Christmas concert, where there was standing room only.  man, it was a great weekend; I’m telling you, if I wasn’t studying biology, I’d be a music major. 🙂

gotta go finish studying, and then do some work for my India class.  I leave for New Delhi in 24 days!

everyone knows i’m in over my head…

Wow…only three more class days.  This is a bittersweet time of the semester.  Yeah…we’re done with classes.  {thank goodness} However, it is crunch time to finish all the papers, assignments, and to study for the finals that are quickly approaching.    Stress  My advice,  don’t stress too much.  Sure, it’s hard not to when it seems you are quickly getting buried in schoolwork.  Just keep in mind that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that these last few assignments and test will not make or break your grade; there have been other assignments and test all year that will be calculated into your final grade.  So really, though it may be a stressful time, it’s not as bad as it seems.   ….OK, now that I have psyched myself for this week, I hope you have a great one and try to listen to my advice.  Don’t get too caught up in it all.  It’s almost over! -wes p.s. – Notice the maroon wall?  I have recently moved into new digs.  Student Affairs and the Student Government offices have moved into a pretty rockin’ new suite.  I lost a window, but I gained a maroon wall.
