At 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, the lawn southeast of Old Main will start filling with homemade shacks made of any available materials. This has to be one of my favorite events because it not only helps people in need, but it’s a way to get together with your friends and have fun.
For those of you coming to WT or are interested in this you will definitely want to know about this. Shack-A-Thon/Give-A-Goat is where different organizations build little (or big) shacks made out of cardboard, wood pallets, and duct tape. Some paint the outside and make it personal. Some make pathways to different “rooms” or just have fun with their little house. The students spend the night and “sleep” in the shacks, but for the most part nobody sleeps! The campus looks so alive during this event because there is never a time when the campus sleeps. You stay up all night and have fun with your friends.
With the money raised from the event, goats are purchased to provide milk and meat for people in the Kenyan region of Turkana. So on top of all the fun and liveliness of the campus it all goes towards a good cause.
If you happen to be visiting campus, you sure won’t miss them. And if you’re not next year will be just as great!
